Just So You Know: Keyboards

Posted on | January 29, 2011 | No Comments

Watching the Day[9] daily and I just sort of felt like typing stuff up on my laptop keyboard. I am really trying to get used to this damn thing … as the keys don’t feel the same as my desktop computer keyboard.
One little tid bit of information that I bet not many people knew about, but of course I do being the nerd I am, is that keyboards actually have a specification to them of how much weight it takes to ‘activate’ the keys on it. Said differently it a rating that says how much weight it takes to press the key down until the computer registers a key click.
The keyboard I am currently using on my desktop actually has a very high value for this specification, which sounds like a big deal but really it’s not as the values for the specification are in grams and are quite small to start with. Regardless it just takes more force of my fingers to actually type and press down on the keys on the keyboard. This is actually not a bad thing as I do do a lot of gaming and when gaming you actually want a little more feedback, or rather I like a little more feedback, in the form of the ‘stiffness’ of the keys. On this new laptop I have however it has an extremely low rating I would have to say, having had a fair amount of experience with keyboards in my day, so it does not take much at all to press a key down and type on this keyboard.
I would say this is an example of a double sided blade, for me anyways, as it is easier to press the keys yes, so typing a lot of words, for example this blog, is quite simple and not a taxing process on your hands and fingers. The ease of pressing makes it so you do not have to expand a ‘lot of energy’, now we’re not talking a lot here but over time it adds up, while typing long documents for instance. Problems such as carpel tunnel syndrome can be avoided as your wrists are not being stressed while typing a lot on the keyboard. Maintaining a high right of WPM (words per minute) is not difficult on this type of keyboard as it is easier to press the keys down and move your fingers right away to the next key you intend to press with it.
The negative aspect to a keyboard like this really just boils down to ernonomus key presses. What that means is that because it is so easy to press the keys down, you tend to get a lot of these accidental key presses during the typing process. The double letter here and there as well as, I don’t know about you but I do this a lot, typing the wrong word but it’s close to what you wanted. For example typing the word “one” instead of “on” or “the” instead of “them”. The extra letters just seem to sneak in there when you don’t want them at all. Also this tends to happen when you are just resting your hands on the keyboard, perhaps reading something and I’ve done this on many an occasion but your hands will just sort of weigh the keys down a little too much and BAM, you’ve pressed “dddddddddddddddddddddd” or something of the like. All in all though I have to say I enjoy the typing experience on this laptop keyboard a lot more then I do on my desktop keyboard. That being said, I think it might be time for me to get a new desktop keyboard. Womp Womp.

Company Branding Idea

Posted on | December 30, 2010 | No Comments

So when I try and sleep and I can not, it is usually because my brain is running a mile per minute with no end in sight. On this particular evening I happen to be thinking of perhaps a new avenue for my company. I’ve been taken in by some recent events and media I have come across and perhaps influenced a little by it.

I have long hated answering questions that, in my opinion five minutes worth of searching could have found the answer two. Such tedious questions have also long plagued me, as it seems I am a very easy source to find these answers from and apparently willing as they seem to keep coming at me. Thus, spawned the idea to create little how-to’s about the nic-nac trivialities that plague all of us, or perhaps most of the laymen user, during the day-to-day.

I’ve already thought of quite a few ideas for them actually. Most notable, everything that has to do with setting up a newly purchased computer. All of which I’ve found I can make a neat little video tutorial on how to do it and what the most common short comings are while doing such a task. I think though a detailed version or perhaps just a detailed tutorial would work well. Having all the options and key points well thought out and discussed. This would also blend well with another idea that came to mind quite some time ago to educate rather then preach.

I will have to dive deeper into this idea in the coming days as I really feel like this would be the best mix of what it is I do best. I enjoy helping people and explaining ideas in such ways that everyone can understand is something I do well.

Ponder ponder my mind went.

Studying: Part 2? No No, Just Studying, Again

Posted on | December 16, 2010 | No Comments

It’s a little on the ironic side that my last post was about studying and it’s difficulties and I came to post again and low and behold, I’m talking about studying and it’s difficulties.

I have not been able to study for any extended period of time. I can do about 30 minutes in a row, or 45 minutes if I push it. Not entirely sure if it’s just me and my study style or perhaps my study environment? It happens to be just right I think. Not too warm as to make it comfortable enough to doze off and bright but not two bright as to make you not want to be in the room. Great company, as my cat has decided to cop-a-squat on the couch next to me and keep the room from feeling empty and isolated. I get that ‘if you can’t beat’em join’em’ feeling now, in that, if I can’t seem to fix the fact that I can only study for short burst of time, then I should go with it and and dive into the material, 30 minutes at a time! … Even I had trouble saying that with a straight face.

Well for now I’m going to jump into another 30 minute set of work. I’ll see you all on the flip.

Studying

Posted on | October 9, 2010 | No Comments

At home studying my butt off trying to learn everything I need to know for the midterm in my business class on Tuesday. I’m glad we have a three day weekend, which gives me a heap of time to study a heap of material.

I find it interesting this ‘highlighting’ method of studying. Read a little, highlight a little, read a little, highlight a little, rinse and repeat. I’ve never done it before so it’s a little awkward for me to study at times. Hard to concentrate and not very much retention of information makes me think I’ll eventually have to find another way to study. Something more efficient.

Upgrade or Headache?

Posted on | September 21, 2010 | 2 Comments

So I’ve decided I want an iPhone 3GS as a second device to compliment my Blackberry 9700. I could never be without my Blackberry as it is truly integrated in every aspect of my life. I and It have a symbiotic relationship and it works. I however long for a lot of the features that Apple’s iPhone brings to the table.

I do own an iPod Touch which, if I get an iPhone, would be come redundant. So in light of this I’m selling the iPod Touch to the highest bidder! I posted the iPod on kijiji in hopes I’ll get some good response. Thank link is posted below.

I can’t help but think, is all this worth it? I mean I have an ‘always connected’ mobile device to which I love and suits my purposes. I feel like all this work in general is a bit of a headache. Though that specific thought could just me my lazier side speaking up?!

In any event, I say I freaking love technology and I’ll do what’s necessary to get the tech I would like! Those gadget freaks out there can sympathize with me. There is an image of the iPod Touch after the break.
